SPRING 2023 – “Kuʻu Kumu Kukui”
The Hawaiian word “Kumu” has many meanings. Some of these meanings include, teacher, source, foundation, origin, and tree. A tree produces leaves, fruits, flowers, branches, roots, and oxygen. The kukui tree in particular symbolizes a source of light. Just like a tree produces, a teacher also symbolically produces many of the same things a tree does. We are an extension or branch of our teachers who are the sources of our enlightenment. They give us resources to bloom. They light our paths and give us the oil to persevere.
