The Estria Foundation (TEF) is a nonprofit arts organization that creates U.S. and international public art that inspires local communities to affect social change and environmental impact. We are seeking an Art Teacher who will be based in Honolulu, Hawai`i. Mission The Estria Foundation creates art in public spaces locally and globally with artists, youth, educators, and activists in order to raise awareness and inspire action in the movement to resolve human and environmental issues.

Mele Murals ProgramLocal artists, youth and other members of communities across the Hawaiian Islands will create a series of large-scale outdoor murals inspired by Hawaiian lyrics (mele), depicting stories of Hawaiian heritage and culture. Mele Murals advances the ideals and spirit of the Hawaiian culture. Our goal is to utilize the popularity of street art to create a movement of young artists who will become trusted cultural leaders.

Mele Murals Intersession Programs Our intersession educational program will be offered during the intersession breaks of Spring Break, Summer Break, and Fall Break. Students will be taught meditation, oli (songs and Hawaiian chants), cultural practices, drawing and painting, all with a focus on project-based, culture-based mural making.

Summer Program On Site Manager

Job Type:  Seasonal Full Time
Location: Kane’ohe, O’ahu
Contract Length: 2-3 months

The Summer Program On Site Manager will be responsible for supporting the Program Coordinator and Estria Foundation administration to manage all on site logistics for that site’s particular Mele Murals Program. The manager will also be responsible for day to day operations, this includes supporting the art teachers’ lesson plans, activities, and games that develop each studentʻs interest in strengthening a sense of belonging, connecting them to our island through Hawaiian art making practices and modern muralism.

Primary Responsibilities

The On Site Managers principle duties include but not limited to:

  • Manage all logistics for Mele Murals Programs for your particular site.
  • Fiscal responsibilities include managing the program budget, maintaining records of spending, collecting receipts, and turning all documents in on-time. 
  • Maintain a program calendar and fulfill project goals.  
  • Maintain program processes, documents, statistics and reports.
  • Manage and coordinate activities of program on site staff, contractors, and volunteers. 
  • Communicate clearly, civilly, and in a timely manner with the overall program manager.
  • Go over program updates and support needs with the Program Coordinator weekly.   
  • Participate in program meetings.
  • Purchase supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Contacts logged in google sheets
  • Participate in performance reviews when the program is completed.
  • Represent The Estria Foundation professionally in public.

Human Resources

  • Assist in the management of staff development and satisfaction 
  • Assist in Interview and selection process for summer hires
  • Participates in performance reviews for Staff members
  • Oversee staff and contractors’ performance.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • An aloha team player who takes initiative, good work ethics, and positive attitude.
  • Follow instructions, organized, and works efficiently
  • Experience using iCloud software (Google Docs, Calendars, ).
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Attention to Detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Able to work independently once trained
  • Reliable, Pleasant/Friendly disposition

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong time management and prioritizes objectives 
  • 1 or more years experience in running educational programs.
  • Understanding of mural and art projects a plus
  • Experience working with DOE system and standards
  • A love for public art
  • Understanding of Hawaiian history, culture, traditions and values.

The Art Teacher will report directly to TEF’s Program Director, and is responsible for the programs’ consistent achievement of the Estria Foundations mission and objectives.

Summer Program Lead Teacher

The Summer Program Lead Teacher will be responsible for supporting the Estria Foundation Administration in developing each student’s interest in and their ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art. The Art Teacher will also be responsible for supporting the Estria Foundation administration to create and support lesson plans, activities, and games that develop each studentʻs interest in strengthening a sense of belonging, connecting them to our island through Hawaiian art making practices and modern muralism.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Organize and prepare all visual art and Hawaiian cultural class curriculum and lesson teachings for the duration of the Intersession Program
  • Organize and prepare art and class materials
  • Attend all mandatory planning meetings prior to Intersession Program, InPerson (tentative) or virtually
  • Access, monitor, and evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings 
  • Communicate with Estria Foundation administration, students, and parents on student progress and any behavior issues as needed
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community
  • Select and requisition art supplies, books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection
  • Work with the Estria Foundation administration to plan engaging lessons and implement lessons for the Intersession program.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities
  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment
  • Be flexible and willing to Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment, operating and maintaining class room

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Education
  • Two years’ work experience as an Art Teacher or similar experience.
  • Completion of a BFA degree preferred and/or Enrolled in bachelors of Fine Arts or related program 
  • Classroom experience (can include student teaching): 1 year
  • Ability to maintain organized administrative and programmatic records
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Highly organized, detailed oriented and deadline driven
  • Ability to inspire trust and confidence, exercise patience and motivate students
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with others

  • Understand a variety of “masters” techniques Art program skills, techniques and concepts.  
  • Understand the versatility of acrylic paints: dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, monoprinting
