Unlike the typical Mele Murals project, where just one huge wall is painted, this collaborative Iron Man Foundation project consisted of eight panels painted by more than 50 students from various schools of the west side of the Big Island of Hawai‘i. Several mo‘olelo stories were painted after a grounding session with the haumāna (students). The inspiration was the theme of this year’s Iron Man race, “Ho‘omau,” which is the Hawaiian value of perseverance, persistence, and determination.
