Kanuikapono Public Charter School

Anahola, HI

After our first grand Mele Murals project with Kanuikapono Public Charter School, we left the school painting supplies and inspiration to start their own mural club. From that inspiration, their first mural club “Project Kanu” was to paint their communityʻs bus stop that was destroyed a year prior to our visit.

The theme for the project was “Mauka to Makai” (from the mountains to the ocean). Since Anaholaʻs land is so rich with the natural resources of fresh water that comes from the mountains and many people forget that they need to take care of their natural resources. We painted with this in mind showing how thriving and fresh the ‘āina (land) was in ancient time with kalo farmers and fishing in the Anahola River. We hope the energy from this mural is carried on to more painting projects for Kanuikaponoʻs mural club.
