Ke Kula ʻo ʻEhunuikaimalino 2018

At the end of March 2018, we returned to South Kona to paint a project with Ke Kula ‘O ‘Ehunuikaimalino before the Hōkūle‘a arrived for the weekend festivities. The mural was painted on two sides of the building across from Oshiroʻs Market in Kainaliu.
On the northern side of the building, the theme was makai (towards the ocean), with a ukulele in the ocean. The puka (hole) of the ukulele is a fish bait ball. A fleet of wa‘a (canoes) approaching the shore was painted by the haumāna (students) and can be looked at in different ways. One interpretation is when you go somewhere, one should ask, “What are you taking there to give?” Another perspective is that the wa‘a are transporting people to Hawaii with the crops they brought.
On the southern side of the building, the theme was mauka (towards the mountain). Hāpu‘u fern was painted by Eugene “Eukarezt” Kristoff and the students. Besides the visions of hāpu‘u coming up in the reflection and meditation sessions, the spirals of hāpu‘u can be thought of as portals.
