Mele Mural Fall Program

2023

In Fall 2023, Mele Murals hosted a unique intersession program that provided students in grades 3 to 5 with a deep, meaningful exploration of Hawaiian culture and identity in Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu and Mountain View, Hawaii. The program was guided by the Hawaiian proverb, “ʻA‘ohe ‘ulu e loa‘a i ka pokole o ka lou,” which translates to “no breadfruit can be reached when the picking stick is too short.” This proverb embodies the idea that success requires preparation and a strong foundation.

Much like the ʻulu tree, known for its towering presence and deep roots, the program aimed to help students ground themselves in their identity, culture, and the arts. The theme of growth was prevalent throughout, as students engaged in a variety of activities designed to strengthen their sense of self and connection to their heritage. With a solid foundation, just like the sturdy ʻulu tree, the students were equipped to stand strong amidst the challenges they might face, both in the classroom and in life.

The program was a blend of cultural enrichment, hands-on learning, and mindfulness practices, allowing the keiki to deepen their understanding of their kulaiwi (homeland), lāhui (culture), and kūʻauhau (genealogy). Students practiced ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language) through mele (poetry), explored legendary places (wahi pana), and participated in creative projects that helped them further connect to their roots. Through this experience, they learned to appreciate the strength that comes from being grounded in one’s culture, and the opportunities that arise from such a strong foundation.

Mountain View Mural – “Kuʻu One Hānau”

This mini mural symbolizes the beauty of our home lands. The water and the land is the most valuable thing to our native people. Itʻs a call to kanaka to put forth good fruit, to feed our people with more than just food, and to partake in the fruits from the trees that our ancestors planted for our benefit. Itʻs a reminder of who we are and what our kuleana is to upkeep this land that continues to give and give.
