Napo’opo’o

Napo’opo’o, Hawai’i

This mural, one of the first in the *Kupuna Series*, stands as a tribute to Frankie Debina—a beloved local surfer, family man, and master of pohaku (stonework). Known for his deep roots in the community and his kind-hearted spirit, Frankie’s life and legacy are immortalized in this vibrant work of art. Through his unique gift with stone and his unyielding love for the land and people, Frankie became a cherished figure whose presence touched the hearts of all who knew him.

The mural captures his essence, not just as a craftsman and surfer, but as a protector of his community, bridging generations through his work and spirit. As one of the guiding figures in the area, Frankie’s legacy is honored through this piece, ensuring that his memory will continue to inspire and guide future generations.

The mural was created with the collaborative efforts of local artists, including Estria, whose deep connection to place and culture guided the creative process. The project was not just an artistic endeavor, but a profound cultural experience for all involved. As Alayna Debina, Frankie’s family member, shared, “Being part of this project will have a lasting impact and impression upon my heart for the rest of all of my days.”

For many, it was an emotionally spiritual experience. As Jack Hemphill reflected, “One of the most spiritual things I’ve ever been a part of.” The mural is not just a visual tribute—it is a living memory of a man who dedicated his life to his community. His spirit will continue to guide and protect those who call this place home, as Alayna Debina said, “Frankie’s spiritual presence will remain. Protecting and guiding generations to come!”

This mural is a testament to the power of art in honoring the past, while connecting the hearts of the present to the future. It is a reminder that love, kindness, and cultural reverence are legacies that live on in the shared creativity of a community.
