Professional Development Mural
Kaimukī High School, Oahu
This was the first workshop that the Estria Foundation offered to teachers in the Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE) on O‘ahu. It was determined that a farther and wider reach of O‘ahuʻs youth could be affected if the Estria Foundation teaches Mele Murals theories and curriculum to the teachers and kumus of students.
A huaka‘i (fieldtrip) to Ka Papa Lo‘i O Kānewai allowed the participants to experience how we allow students to connect with the lo‘i (taro patch) and reflect how the way of life used to be in ancient Hawaiian time. Lastly a small scale mural was painted with all teachers participating to experience the same connection to our culture, our land, and their creative energy.
