Aloha kakou! Our Mele Murals team finished murals with Prince Jonah Kuhio Elementary School and Ke Kula o Ehunuikaimalino in March and weʻre preparing for more murals in Nanakuli with Ka Waihona o Ka Naauao Public Charter School in April.
We would like to thank the staff and students of Prince Jonah Kuhio Elementary School for working on Marchʻs Mele Murals project. The students were lucky to learn the basics of mural painting at our afterschool program of Halau Paheona and share their knowledge of painting skills with their classmates and the rest of their school. Mahalo also to the staff at Ka Papa Loi o Kanewai for hosting and educating our fieldtrip!

The Estria Foundation / Mele Murals is providing our kokua on Earth Day, April 22nd. The Malama Palolo event involves Clean Water Honolulu, Tree to Seas Inc., Iolani School, Palolo Elementary, Aiiolani Elementary School, and Kaimuki High School to protect and restore the stream waters in our ahupuaa subdivision of Honolulu. The Estria Foundation is competing for a Grant-in-aid from the State of Hawaii in support of our Mele Murals program and a Summer Public Arts Conference that will bring keiki from across the Hawaii state to network, create public art, engage in Hawaiian culture and develop new and exciting painting techniques!
Our team continues to meet with our district legislators to share about our community arts and placemaking programs and project across the State of Hawai’i. You can help us by reaching out to your community legislators and ask that they support the Estria Foundation’s Grant-in-aid for 2018 to 2019. Every call, email and letter of support helps!
