Mele Murals Fall Program

October 7th – 11th, 2024

“He aliʻi ka ʻāina, he kauwā ke kanaka”

The Land is The Chief; Man is itʻs Servents

Our Fall 2024 theme is “Aliʻi” which means chief/chiefess or ruler. Our focus on our aliʻi will be lessons focused on what it means to be a pono (righteous) leader. As an up and coming generation, we felt led to this theme to dive deeper into the lives of our royal rulers and a better understanding of how they lead our people. Once they understand what it means to be an aliʻi we will then highlight the ʻōlelo noʻeau above to help them understand our role as servants to the land and our responsibilities to care and nurture our true chiefess; Papahānaumokuakea (Earth Mother).

This program is designed to engage keiki in a culture-focused arts curriculum perpetuating Hawaiian culture. Students will strengthen their sense of belonging by connecting to Hawai‘i. We will explore her rich culture and uncover the beauty of this place we call home by learning mele (poetry) written mostly in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (native tongue), rooted in wahi pana (legendary place). We will hear from special guest speakers, make crafts, and practice mindfulness.

Registration is now open!  We are accepting applications for our Mele Murals Spring Program. This Art and Hawaiian Culture program is available for in-person learning for students grades 3rd – 5th. All art supplies, huaka’i (field trips), Mele Murals program tshirt, and daily snacks will be provided.  Students must bring daily home lunch and drinking water in a reusable water bottle.
