Aloha kākou! 2018 is off to a great start with our team finishing a Mele Mural in Kaneohe near Windward Mall funded by the City and County of Honolulu and preparing for more murals in Palolo and Waimanalo.
We would like to thank James B. Castle High Schoolʻs Hooulu Opio Academy, Kaneohe Elementary school, Ke Kula Kaiapuni o Puaohala Hawaiian immersion school, Kualoa-Heeia KEY Project, and Hakipuu Learning Center Public Charter school for working on Februaryʻs Mele Murals project. Our next Mele Murals project will take us back to Moiliili, where our team will work with with students from Prince Jonah Kuhio Elementary School in the month of March. The students have been progressing strongly at our afterschool classes at Halau Paheona (School of Visual Arts). Below shows the students using basic shapes and patterns to create animals or aumakua that they connect with. In an overview lesson, the students learn that the more they take care of the land we live on, the animals they care about will flourish.
