Cathedral Catholic Academy

Nu‘uanu, O‘ahu

This was the first project that Cathedral Catholic Academy and Pacific Buddhist Academy in Nu‘uanu worked together on. In addition, the special education students from Robert J. Stevenson Middle School also joined for a day of painting. The revelation was that this was the first time many of the students held a paintbrush, nonetheless paint a large scale mural.

After several sessions of reflection, several concepts and images were translated for the mural. One image was a circle of children holding hands around a tree of life. Many rainbows were also seen in the visions of the students that bridge across the sky over the stream that runs behind Cathedral Catholic Academyʻs school campus. Poliʻahu and Kāne are portrayed on the front wall with the face of Keaomelemele, the daughter of Hina & Kū, and represents the cool showers of Nu‘uanu valley. The rainbows represent the new bridge of people in the Nu‘uanu community and the relationship between Cathedral Catholic Academy and Pacific Buddhist Academy.
